Stockyard – Oatmeal Stout

Stockyard - Oatmeal Stout

Reading around the web everyone seems to be getting Stockyard Oatmeal Stout from the same shop (Trader Joe’s); this is not meant to imply that only this store is selling it but certainly if you are in the immediate area surrounding Chicago you are most likely to find it here than anywhere else. I am also seeing a lot of suggestions that this is brewed by Goose Island, and that is pretty much it. I am sure there is a fabulous reason why someone, somewhere wants to keep this beer a mystery, but I wish they would desist and tell us more about. I am almost tempted to add a policy of only writing about beers that actually have some information about them somewhere and not just remain mysterious. Hello people; 21st century; we are well into (and almost out of) the information age.

The Beer: 5.6% (supposedly, the bottle doesn’t say); deep black in colour, with a frothy tan head; dark roasted aroma; firstly bitter giving in to a deep roasting of grains and elements of coffee; smooth, but at the same time rich and a good mouthful of all things stout; malty, no creamy elements. medium carbonation.

After almost getting to the end of the glass I hit the oatiness, I had to found it, but it was there in the end; I would say that the bitter-roasted elements come out stronger than any oatmeal flavours, but it is there. If you find it in a store, wonder what it is or where it comes from then join the same club as everyone else. Worth trying if you like stouts.
